Let the pros at VJR handle all your old carpet removal and disposal needs.

Carpet Disposal

Pulling up an old carpet can leave you with a bigger mess than you expected. Apart from the carpet, there are often layers of foam and padding to deal with. Most city garbage services won’t take excessive carpet from such projects. This leaves you with a pile of unusable materials that are both an eyesore and a looming health threat.

Hint: pests, rodents, and mold/mildew LOVE old carpets.

Common Questions About Our Carpet Disposal and Removal Services

How Do You Remove Carpet?

With the right tools and a little practice, pulling up old carpet isn’t terribly difficult. It is backbreaking though, so be ready to work up a sweat. First, make sure you have all the safety gear covered (gloves and goggles). Then you’ll need to pull the carpet up from the tack strip connected to the wall. This is best done with pliers. Once an edge is free, and with enough force, the carpet can be pulled up by hand.

PRO TIP: Cut up the carpet into smaller, more manageable sections that can be folded or rolled up and carried out with ease.

How Do You Remove Carpet Glue?

Carpet glue can be notoriously difficult to remove. While we’d love to help you with the cleanup, if you’re a DIYer you might want to give it a go on your own.

How to Remove Carpet Glue From Surfaces:

Using a scraper, razor, or utility knife, carefully scrape off as much of the excess as possible.

Stubborn glue left behind can be softened up with boiling water or a heat gun (don’t use a blowtorch) before attempting another scraping session.

How Do You Remove Carpet Tack Strips?

Carpet tack strips are anchored in place by small wooden strips studded with nails. These planks of wood can be reused if you plan on re-installing new carpets, saving you the task of removing them. However, if you plan on putting down tile, laminate, wood planks, or other flooring, they’ll need to go. This can turn a simple carpet removal project into a full-out construction project. Luckily, VJR can help!

From making more usable space in your yard to getting rid of an unused or decaying swing set, our team is the answer. We are fully equipped to quickly and reliably take down, remove, and haul off your old swing set.

At VJR we make sure to donate or recycle any appropriate items. Saving you the headache and time. You’ll be enjoying your new space at your leisure…all without lifting a hand or breaking a sweat.

To Remove The Tack Strips:

Tack strips are easily located by finding the nail head poking up from under the carpet.

Once you do that, use a pry bar to pull up the tack strip by creating leverage between the floor and the strip. Pull the opposite side of the bar with a hammer to pop it loose.

If the strip is stuck, try removing the nails from it first to loosen its hold on the underlying floor. Repeat step #2.

Once removed, be sure to do a good sweep of the room. Make sure all remaining nails, splinters, and debris are cleared.

How Do You Remove Carpet from Stairs?

Stairs represent a unique challenge; one that we love tackling. You, however, may not. Stairs are awkward, dangerous, and a general pain in the rear. First up, you’ll need a utility knife to carefully cut along the nose of the landing. Once lose (carefully paying attention to your balance), use both hands to pull up the carpet from the vertical risers. When it is loose enough, peel up one stair at a time. But wait, there’s more. You’ll still need to remove all the tack strips per our instructions further above.

How Do You Dispose of Carpet?

Ok, so you’ve removed the carpet. Now what? While small pieces of carpet can be stuffed in your garbage can, the majority of towns will not take large quantities of old carpeting. That leaves you with two options. The first is to load up a truck and drive the remainder to a waste drop-off facility. The second is to call a junk hauler like us to load it up and take it away for you.

Can You Throw Out Carpet in a Dumpster?

The carpet is out, and now you’re looking for where to dispose of it. Can you use a dumpster? Some municipalities do allow carpet and rugs to be thrown out in dumpsters. However, it is not uncommon to have limits as to how much you’re allowed to throw out.

Is Carpet Recyclable?

Carpet is made from a wide range of fibers, plastics, and chemicals, all of which don’t break down well in landfills. As such, most types of carpets can be broken down into their raw materials and recycled for use in future products.

Can Carpet Go to the Landfill?

Carpet is often made from an array of chemically treated plastics and fibers engineered to withstand a lot of abuse underfoot. This also makes them notoriously difficult to break down in landfills. As such, when possible, it is best to recycle them.
